Precautions to Consider
While some effects of having stained teeth are obvious, others are subtler - and equally as damaging. Regardless of the causes, the effects of stained teeth remain the same across the board.
- Tooth Sensitivity
- Consumers may experience mild to severe tooth sensitivity and/or gum irritation after undergoing peroxide-based teeth-bleaching treatments. If you experience an uncomfortable level of sensitivity during treatment, try cutting back on time duration and/or frequency of your treatments. If the problem continues to persist, contact your dentist.
- Toxicity
- Those who overuse peroxide-based teeth whiteners may increase their risk of potential toxicity. To avoid this, use teeth whiteners only as directed and set realistic expectations for teeth-whitening products.
- Enamel Damage
- Excessive damage to tooth enamel is usually not present in those who use peroxide-based teeth whiteners as directed. However, teeth whiteners that use abrasive ingredients to "polish" away stains may carry a higher risk of enamel damage.
- Teeth-Whitening Addiction
- Though not a medically recognized condition, some professionals believe there are consumers who have teeth-whitening addictions. The overuse of teeth-whitening products and the drive to make teeth "as white as snow" are signs that someone may have a problem. To avoid this behavior, set realistic expectations for teeth-whitening products.
